Lehighton, Pennsylvania, Images of America, Paperback Lehighton offers an engaging look into the past of the idyllic Pennsylvania community.Lehighton was the first settlement in Carbon County. This idyllic community sits between two beautiful Pennsylvania State Parks, the Lehigh Gorge and Beltzville. The Lehigh Valley Railroad transformed Lehighton into a bustling railroad town, where free enterprise reigned. The LVRR quickly became the major employer of the town’s population and was fully integrated into the very fabric of Lehighton, its people, and the culture. Local business thrived, and the success of the Lehigh Stove Company, the Moxie Bottling Company, and the Lehigh Wagon Company enticed other businesses to move into the area. Along with hauling anthracite coal, the LVRR began passenger service, and Lehighton was on the railroad’s main line. The scenery that brought droves of Victorians to ride the Lehigh Valley Railroad and other Pennsylvania trains, today brings tourism of another kind. White-water rafting on the Lehigh River is some of the best in the state, and fishermen can still land native trout.

Cobb County, Georgia, Images of America, Paperback Cobb County was a wilderness of virgin forests and unspoiled vistas inhabited by the Creek and Cherokee Indians when the first settlers began arriving in the early 1800s. Farms, railroads, booming trade, new houses, schools and churches, and industrial development soon marked the area. After the state land lottery in 1832, wagonloads of people poured into the new county, encroaching on American Indian lands. The federal government’s removal of the Native Americans, construction of the state-owned railroad, and the Civil War greatly affected Cobb County in the 1800s. Reconstruction and the Great Depression forced a severe economic downturn on the entire South, and the area lagged behind the rest of the nation until after World War II. Unprecedented growth in the last half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st has boosted Cobb’s economic stance and its place as the fourth largest county in Georgia.

Newby named the town after his hometown of McMinnville, Tennessee, and saw plenty of local opportunities on his land, straddling an old Native American trail along what is now Baker Street. Newby had a millstone shipped from Oregon City so grain could be ground at his mill. Soon, a blacksmith shop and a general store attracted people to an expanding village. In 1866, the area’s first newspaper began publication and would later become the McMinnville News-Register. Newby donated land for a college, built churches, warehouses, mills, and stores. The city was incorporated in 1882, shortly after the arrival of the railroad. Since then, McMinnville has become the center of population and government for Yamhill County. It sports many modern industries and retains the charm of the historic city along Third Street.
